- WBI-sponsored annual Public Art Tour will be going to the Airport Sunday, April 22, 2012.The tour will probably start about 2:30pm with optional lunch at the airport at 1pm. Times will be finalized as we get closer to the date.
This year, the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission is charging a fee for tours. We also typically request a donation to the WBI Campership fund. So the total fee this year will be $15. If that’s a hardship, please let me know, and we’ll make something work.
Meanwhile, mark your calendars! We won’t be able to get through the security area, but we will be able to see all of the art on the land-side of the terminal, on the people mover (did you even know there was art along the tracks?!), and at the first part of the air-side of the terminal. It will be a GREAT TOUR!
If you want to be counted “in”, please email me at merleserlin@gmail.com or call 916-442-0464. Thanks! - Merle Axelrad Serlin

CELEBRATING ROSH CHODESH – An Ancient Tradition Reborn
By Deni Deutsch Marshall
WBI Past President
"Whoever blesses the new moon in its time welcomes in the presence of the Shechina." (Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 42a) Jewish women throughout history have experienced a particular tie to Rosh Chodesh. In midrashic literature (the stories that add color to our texts), the moon is associated with women and femininity. Rosh Chodesh, or head of the month, ushers in the new month in the Jewish calendar. It is mentioned a number of times in the Torah, as well as our other holy books. These references speak of the festive elements of the day, including the sounding of the shofar. In the Talmud, a clear connection is drawn between women and the New Moon. They are instructed to do no work on the New Moon as reward for not contributing their jewelry towards the building of the Golden Calf.
In the 1970’s a number of Jewish women "rediscovered" Rosh Chodesh as a women’s holiday and began monthly Rosh Chodesh celebrations. This new-old tradition has spread throughout many parts of the US, Canada, England, Australia and Israel. These Rosh Chodesh groups cultivate the uniqueness of women and what many of us experience as our innate spirituality and capacity to deeply connect to Judaism through our bodies, minds and souls.
Women of B’nai Israel began to sponsor a Rosh Chodesh group with Rabbi Alfi as our teacher and leader over 15 years ago. This group continues to flourish and almost every month of the year we gather to share food, prayer, study, laughter, insights and companionship. The Rosh Chodesh group reconvenes on Tuesday August 30th with what we believe to be a very exciting year. We have attempted to offer a program this year that is balanced between the cultural, the spiritual and social justice elements of our tradition.
The yearly schedule is printed below and we encourage those of you who have never attended to choose one that looks interesting and come give it try. We welcome all women over the age of 13, and no RSVP is necessary. We begin a dairy potluck at 6:15 p.m. and service/study runs from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. See you there!
