Our Mission Statement

Women of B’nai Israel, an affiliate of Women of Reform Judaism, is the collective voice of women in our congregation. We are a diverse, multi-generational organization providing opportunities to serve Congregation B’nai Israel and the larger community through learning, social action, worship and programming.

A Message from Our President Sandy Lee

Women of B’nai Israel is active throughout the year in our congregation, the greater Sacramento community, and the worldwide Jewish community through our affiliation with Women of Reform Judaism. Within our congregation, we support or sponsor numerous CBI events, such as the Rosh Hashanah reception, the 2nd Night Seder, the Wine and Food Festival, Happy Hour Havdalah, and a quarterly Rosh Chodesh program. We make donations to the Confirmation class and youth groups and raise funds for camperships to help our children attend URJ summer camps. This past year our charitable contributions totaled $17, 168 of which donated $11,518 was donated to our Congregation and $5,650 to other community organizations, including the Central Downtown Food Basket.

Here are some of our recent highlights:

  • Women of B’nai Israel organized a group for the Women’s March to the State Capitol and will do so again this year.
  • We raised almost an additional $1,000 for the Price Campership Fund at our annual Fall Fashion show.
  • Last year, at our 2016 Membership Appreciation luncheon, we created 25 complete refugee welcome kits for the Opening Doors project. At this year’s luncheon, we honored Wellspring’s 30th anniversary by contributing items towards their Nutritious Meal Program, Children’s Corner Program, Safety Net Services Program and the Women’s Wellness Program. We also raised funds to rebuild Camp Newman after the devastating fire.
  • We sponsored a team for the 5K run to benefit My Sister’s House.
  • Many of our members participate in Family Promise every year

Please join this organization of dynamic and exciting women and help make a difference within our congregation, the greater Sacramento community and the International community. You can be involved in Women of B’nai Israel as little or as much as you like.

Social Action

Social Action

What we're about:

In an effort to expand our Social Action activities, Congregation B'nai Israel has embarked on a collaborative effort with Sacramento Area Congregations Together (ACT) to design a "Listening Campaign" based on a community organizing tool that has had success in other congregations.

Volunteer "listeners" from CBI received training from ACT to conduct 1-2 hour "house gatherings" with other members from CBI. These house gatherings served as an informal and fun way to connect congregation members from similar neighborhoods and will give us opportunities to explore issues that are important to our congregants and our community. Through this process, we hope to identify new social action projects to help address significant issues in our community and city.

The trained congregational "listeners" will reflect on the common social action themes discussed during the house gathering process and present these themes to the board and then back to the congregation. Several forums will be offered following Erev Shabbat services to describe, in further detail, those themes that garnered the most interest and the specific project opportunities that will be developed. Each forum will offer both hands-on and advocacy project participation. I encourage you to attend the forums and find the opportunity to engage that fits you best.

Look for information about these upcoming forums in the chadashot and the temple calendar over the next several months. We look forward to your enthusiasm, ideas, and participation.
